Ancient Man Caused Global Warming?

From the Emails 082109

Hey folks,

FINALLY it's FRIDAY! Happy Friday to you all. Since it is Friday, it's time to go to the Emails. I love the absolute absurdity of this article. It was sent in by our friend Irishgodfather who said this.

"Pete take a look at this."

OK I did. This is a piece by Shelby Lin Erdman over at CNN talking about a Professor at the University of Virginia, who is also a Climate Scientist, BIG money in being a Climate Scientist, who claims that it was the Ancient Man's Farming techniques that caused the start of Global Warming.

I wonder what the price tag was for this study. There is only one problem with all this. A little ol' Blogger, ME, can debunk this BS with three words. "It's called Cycles."

Here is the piece, then we'll talk about it.

CNN - Study: Global warming sparked by ancient farming methods updated 8:37 p.m. EDT, Tue August 18, 2009 by Shelby Lin Erdman

(CNN) -- Ancient man may have started global warming through massive deforestation and burning that could have permanently altered the Earth's climate, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The study, published in the scientific journal Quaternary Science Reviews and reported on the University of Virginia's Web site, says over thousands of years, farmers burned down so many forests on such a large scale that huge amounts of carbon dioxide were pumped into the atmosphere. That possibly caused the Earth to warm up and forever changed the climate.

Lead study author William Ruddiman is a professor emeritus of environmental sciences at the University of Virginia and a climate scientist.

"It seems like a common-sense idea that there weren't enough people around 5, 6, 7,000 years ago to have any significant impact on climate. But if you allow for the fact that those people, person by person, had something like 10 times as much of an effect or cleared 10 times as much land as people do today on average, that bumps up the effect of those earlier farmers considerably, and it does make them a factor in contributing to the rise of greenhouse gasses," Ruddiman said.

Ruddiman said that starting thousands of years ago, people would burn down a forest, poke a hole in the soil between the stumps, drop seeds in the holes and grow a crop on that land until the nutrients were tapped out of the soil. Then they would move on.

"And they'd burn down another patch of forest and another and another. They might do that five times in a 20-year period," he said.

Ruddiman has studied and researched the idea of ancient man contributing to climate change for years now. And he's endured plenty of criticism over his theories.

Ken Caldeira, a climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, California, is among those who disagree with Ruddiman. He said Ruddiman is "exaggerating the importance of early man."

Caldeira told CNN that while ancient farmers may have played a tiny role in climate change, "it just wasn't a significant factor."

He added, "There are actually studies showing if you cut down forests for farmland, you actually cool the planet, because of the glare from the cleared land."

Ruddiman and study co-author Erle Ellis, an ecologist with UMBC, acknowledge that some models of past land use show it's only been in the past 150 years -- with a huge population explosion, the onset of the Industrial Age and the rise of fossil-fuel burning -- that global warming has accelerated.

But Ruddiman said, "My argument is that even at the beginning, they just used much more land per person, so even though there weren't that many people, they used enough to start to push these greenhouse gas concentrations up."

Ruddiman's research also argues that the Earth was on its way to another ice age 10,000 years ago and that ice sheets were already forming in northern latitudes when ancient man started his slashing and burning method of farming.

So this guy is saying, if we are to believe his theory, that we have been warming for 5 to 7 THOUSAND years? Complete and utter nonsense. Remember this?

"Over the weekend, I was sent a list of New York Times articles dating back to 1855 addressing the global warming and cooling that has been happening on this planet for the past 150 years. I have taken the liberty of adding a few pieces that I discovered in the Times’ archives to further illustrate the point. "

This was by Noel Sheppard over at Newsbusters. CYCLES, Natural, normal, CYCLES. Of course the Climate changes. Hence them changing the name from Global Warming to Climate Change. The Climate changes day to day. It rains today, not tomorrow. This Summer is COOLER than others, warmer than some. Our temperatures go up and down all the time. As a matter of fact, we haven't been warming since 98. It all has to do with, ready? Wait for it. I know this is a radical concept. It all has to do with the SUN. Imagine that?

So just using the FACTS that are right in front of us, the HISTORY of FACTS that have been logged and recorded, THERE IS NO GLOBAL WARMING. We sure as hell have not been warming for over 7 thousand years. So I ask again. What was the price tag for this study?

I have seen to many of these so called educated people who are nothing but wackjobs and should never be listened to.

I get to the point sometime feeling that these people need to off themselves because they are such pessimists and believers of nonsense.

You have to look a little deeper into the subject; to find its cause. The so-called scientists who keep producing one article after another are not doing it for free.
There is a great deal of money in Global Warming especially when Governments get into the picture. To this day their still is no valid experiment showing that co2 causes a planet to get warmer. If anything it is the opposite; global warming MAY to a slight degree increase co2. A warming planet is a GOOD thing; a cooling one is not so good. The whole argument is NOT a scientific one but a political one to raise taxes a thus create the blueprint of the world that politicians crave for.
All politicians have a blueprint for you,(that's why they become politicians) what you think, to them is for the most part irrelevant, except at the voting booth. Unless something is so popular then they will agree with it to get elected regardless of the truth of it. Hence we had two of these crooks both supporting the Global Warming bullshit in the last election McCain and Obama.
Talk about criminals Al Gore almost became president.
Now let me tell you what I really think...............

Hey Sam,

That's why I call them the Chicken Little Crowd. "The sky is falling, the sky is falling." Only in this case, the acorn is actually made of money.

It's all about power, control, and of course all that money.

You have never been shy D.S. {Smile}

You are right. Just like Obamacare, if this passes in total, the way they want, it will give the Government new and unconstitutional powers and control over all of our PRIVATE Lives. Of course in this case, we can still do whatever we want, as long as we PAY them to do it.
