IWA For Sunday 011109

A Royal Blunder

Hey folks,

It's Sunday. Time for the IWA. Now most of you know that I am FAR from PC, Politically Correct. I think most people today are under the impression that they have the Right to be offended, and if they are, then you have to abstain from this or that. You can say or do this, because someone may become offended. If you do, then you are just a horrible person that is in need of being corrected.

I think that PC has pretty much BS. But I do understand that at times, when you are in the public eye, you HAVE to think before you speak. Right, wrong, or indifferent, there really are some things you should not say. Just ask our Idiot of the Week.

AOL News - Prince Harry Apologizes for Remarks

A British newspaper published video Saturday that shows Prince Harry using the phrases "our little paki friend" and "raghead" to refer to military colleagues in 2006. He issued an apology for his remarks and said he didn't use the terms in malice.

He most likely didn't. The person he was talking about IS his friend. His FRIEND didn't seem to mind, but since the word "paki" was made Public by the News Paper, there were a few quick to jump on the PC bandwagon.

Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Ramadan Foundation — a British Muslim youth organization — said the comments are likely to offend people both in Britain and Pakistan.

"Harry, as a public figure, must ensure that he promotes equality and tolerance and this rant, whether today or three years ago, is sickening and he should be thoroughly ashamed of himself," Shafiq said.

Labour Party lawmaker Khalid Mahmood, a Muslim, also criticized Harry over the comments. "This might have been said in a lighthearted manner but ultimately it's offensive to a lot of people," he said.

"He needs to understand that this is not acceptable, especially in light of the office that he is going to hold in the army and as a member of the Royal Family.
St. James's Palace — the office of Harry and his elder brother Prince William — said on Saturday that Harry was sorry for any offense caused by his use of the word "paki."

"Prince Harry fully understands how offensive this term can be, and is extremely sorry for any offense his words might cause," spokesman Patrick Harrison said in a statement.

Now Prince Harry is not the IWA winner this week for saying what he did. But for thinking that it was private. When you are someone in the Public life and people are ALWAYS around attempting to get that "Money Shot" or that "Big Story" about you. You pretty much have to assume ANYTHING you say or do is out there for all to see.

Now I have to admit something here. I had no idea that "Paki" was a Racial term. None. I thought all that ta-do was about "Raghead." Which he used to refer to either the Taliban or Iraqi insurgents.

So I had to look it up.

The abbreviation Paki acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to subjects of former colony states in a derogatory and racist manner. In modern British usage "Paki" is typically used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians, Afghans and Bangladeshis. To a lesser extent, the term has been applied as a racial slur towards Arabs and other Middle Eastern-looking groups who may resemble South Asians. During the 60's many emigrants were also dubbed as "black" to further segregate them from the white community. Some would say such a division still exists in parts of England.

In recent times there has been a trend by second and third-generation British Pakistanis to reclaim the word. The word has been turned into a keepsake for the young British Pakistani community that is not acceptable for someone outside the community to say it, including Indians and Bangladeshis.

So it must be like the "N" Word. Once used, and sometimes still used, as a Racial Term that is now used BY Blacks to describe each other which is OK if it is THEM using it. {Sigh} Did you know that "Paki" was the "P" Word? I didn't.

Anyway Prince Harry, you are the Idiot of the Week. For forgetting that every and anything you may say will be made Public, and of being a Brit, you should have known that in essence, what you said was, "What up my Nigger?" {Laughing}
Peter
