You will be missed.
Hey folks,
It is with a saddened heart that I post today. "From the Emails" will appear this Sunday in the Big Sunday Edition. But right now I want to talk about a good friend to all that knew him, Ed Burchfield.
“Mr. Ed,” Burchfield had been a staple on local radio since 1983. The "Breakfast With Burchfield Show" was what I tuned into every Monday through Friday at 1590, WPSL between 6 to 9 AM. Together with Newsman Charlie Neeld they made my mornings a little brighter. Together for more than 12 years, they were the longest-running radio duo on the Treasure Coast.
Ed started “Breakfast with Burchfield” on WIRA 1400 AM of Fort Pierce Florida in 1983. Then moved his show to WPSL 1590 in Port St Lucie Floria, to take over the morning show that had been started by Greg and Carol Wyatt in 1994.
Him and Charlie were known for taking the Show on the road and was a major player in the WPSL Christmas Kids that makes sure that all kids have something under the tree on Christmas Day.
Mr. Ed was truly a great person. He just had a way of making people feel as if they knew him their whole lives. He joked and felt TRUE compassion. He LISTENED and even gave advice. Never arrogant. Never "to busy." He would stop and talk to anyone, no matter where he was or what he was doing.
Radio lost a TRUE giant Wednesday afternoon. Ed Burchfield, 67, died at his home, ending a three-year battle with cancer.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Helen Burchfield; daughters, Paige Burchfield of Fort Pierce, and Mary Burchfield of Port St. Lucie; son, Ted Burchfield of Port St. Lucie; stepson, Mark Hendry of Canada; stepdaughter, Jamie Lawson of Canada; and two grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to WPSL Christmas Kids, 4100 Metzger Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34947.
Services: Visitation will be held on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Haisley Funeral Home. A service will be conducted on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Haisley Funeral & Cremation Service. A guest book may be signed at www.haisleyfuneralhome.com
I know a lot of you, well OK, MOST of you true OPNers out there are not from Florida or this local area. There is also a good chance that you have never heard of Mr. Ed Burchfield. Trust me on this, he is going to be missed by the hundreds of thousands of people that he has touch over the years. You can check out WPSL 1590 Tribute and see for yourself.
God Speed Mr. Ed. May his family have the peace and comfort that they need at this time. See you all Sunday.
Peter
