IWA For Sunday, February 04, 2007

Hey folks,

Picture this. You plan a trip. Be it business, vacation, visiting family, it doesn’t matter the reason. You go on with your daily life. The day draws near. Tis the night before, you cannot sleep. You get packed and ready to go. The alarm goes off and you head out.

For whatever reason, you end up arriving late. Just ten minutes before your flight is due to take off. You go to the ticket counter and are turned away. The plane is boarded and is starting to pull out to get into position.

What do you do? Do you plead with the powers to be and try to get on the flight? Do you try to get another flight? No, no, no. I have a better solution for you. Follow the lead of Yechezkel Wells of Miami Beach. Actually, I REALLY wouldn’t recommend it.

You see folks, this happen to Mr. Wells. His solution? How could he possibly buy some time? Stop the plan? Call in a bomb threat. Yup, a bomb threat.

LOS ANGELES -- A federal judge sentenced a Florida man to two years probation for calling in a fake bomb threat after arriving too late to board his flight at Long Beach Airport.

Yechezkel Wells, 22, of Miami Beach, also was ordered Monday to spend six months confined to his home, perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine.

Wells pleaded guilty in October, acknowledging he made the fake threat in an effort to keep his Jet Blue flight to Fort Lauderdale from leaving.

Well, that was productive. I do not think he will have to worry about flying again.

Court documents said Wells arrived 10 minutes before the Aug. 26 flight and was turned away at the check-in counter. Upset, he walked over to a pay phone and called 911.

The flight was delayed while bomb-sniffing dogs searched the plane, and FBI agents detained Wells for questioning.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper called Wells' hoax ``incredibly stupid.'' ``The conduct is really quite astonishing and could have been dangerous to a lot of people,'' the judge said.

{Laughing} "Incredibly stupid?" You think? Now this is the same Judge that declared a mistrial in Notorious B.I.G wrongful death case back in 2005. She has had her share of stupidity.

Even his own attorney cannot find a way to spin this for his client.

Defense attorney Donald Etra, who once described Wells' act as ``unbelievably bad judgment,'' said his client learned his lesson.

``He's 22 years of age and he certainly has a lot yet to learn from the world,'' Etra said. ``He's learned you don't mess with the airlines and you don't mess with airline safety.''

I have to admit, I have had this since about Monday. I have been watching and waiting for someone to come along an beat the stupidity of Mr. Wells. Noone did. So congratulations Mr. Wells, you ARE the Idiot of the Week.

Peter
