Huge quake hits Chile

Our thoughts and Prayers are with those in Chile.

Hey folks,

AP - Huge quake hits Chile; tsunami threatens Pacific By ROBERTO CANDIA and EVA VERGARA, Associated Press Writer Roberto Candia And Eva Vergara, Associated Press Writer – 40 mins ago

TALCA, Chile – A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.

Interior Minister Edmundo Perez Yoma said the most powerful quake to hit the country in a half-century killed at least 82 people, but the death toll was rising quickly.

In the town of Talca, just 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the epicenter, Associated Press journalist Roberto Candia said it felt as if a giant had grabbed him and shaken him.

The town's historic center, filled with buildings of adobe mud and straw, largely collapsed, though most of those were businesses that were not inhabited during the 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST, 0634 GMT) quake. Neighbors pulled at least five people from the rubble while emergency workers, themselves disoriented, asked for information from reporters.

It was pretty bad there folks. Also now Tsunami Warning Center called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the warning center said. It did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

Lets hope we do not have a repeat.

UK Express - WEATHER: HOTTEST JANUARY EVER SAY CLIMATE EXPERTS By Donna Bowater

{Laughing} OK.

CLIMATE scientists yesterday stunned Britons suffering the coldest winter for 30 years by claiming last month was the hottest January the world has ever seen.

The remarkable claim, based on global satellite data, follows Arctic temperatures that brought snow, ice and travel chaos to millions in the UK.

Yeah and 21 inches in NYC. More Snow than the last 4 years. Record cold Nationwide. Snow in EVERY State of the union, including Florida. {Sigh} They are basing it on global satellite data? The same that use those measuring sticks that have been proven to have been messed with? Or the DATA that has been proven to have been completely made up and the REAL tempts suppressed? Whatever folks. Like I said, just plain silly.

The Earth is bigger than the east coast and England. Gonna be 61 in Western Montana today. 61. March 1st. That's 23 degrees above AVERAGE. That means it's warmer than average. AGAIN. I doubt it's 23 degrees below average in D.C.

Record cold Nationwide

Actually, we've experienced NO record cold this winter. Actually, we may set a record HIGH today. 61 on March 1st. Gotta be kidding. The Earth's average temperature is increasing. The Earth is bigger than the country in which you live.

Hey Peter,

Very little time this morning. I got a WAY late start. So, I will leave you with this thought today.

The world is a much bigger place than that little State you live in. {Smile}

Record Snow WORLD WIDE. Record LOWS World wide. The GLOBAL Temps are DECREASING. Yes, even according to some of those once promoting Global Warming.

You are having record warmth? Good for you. lower heating costs. I'm willing to bet it will get warmer. You know, in about three months or so.

You just keep pointing to the east coast (ahhh. east coast bias.) as proof that the earth is not getting warmer. Show me the #s

The past year, 2009, tied as the second warmest year in the 130 years of global instrumental temperature records, in the surface temperature analysis of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). The Southern Hemisphere set a record as the warmest year for that half of the world.

Global mean temperature, as shown in Figure 1a, was 0.57 °C (1.0 °F) warmer than climatology (the 1951‐1980 base period). Southern Hemisphere mean temperature, as shown in Figure 1b, was 0.49 °C (0.88 °F) warmer than in the period of climatology.

See link for figures -- sorry I cannot copy them from the pdf file -- drat!!!

Figure 1. (a) GISS analysis of global surface temperature change. Green vertical bar is estimated 95% confidence range (two standard deviations) for annual temperature change. (b) Hemispheric
temperature change in GISS analysis. (Base period is 1951–1980. This base period is fixed consistently
in GISS temperature analysis papers – see References. Base period 1961–1990 is used for comparison
with published HadCRUT analyses in Figures 3 and 4.)

The global record warm year, in the period of near‐global instrumental measurements (since the late 1800s), was 2005. Sometimes it is asserted that 1998 was the warmest year.

The origin of this confusion is discussed below.

There is a high degree of interannual (year‐to‐year) and decadal variability in both global and hemispheric temperatures. Underlying this variability, however, is a long‐term warming trend that has become strong and persistent over the past three decades.

The long‐term trends are more apparent when temperature is averaged over several years. The 60‐month (5‐year) and 132 month (11‐year) running mean temperatures are shown in Figure 2 for the globe and the hemispheres. The 5‐year mean is sufficient to reduce the effect of the El Nino–La Nina cycles of tropical climate. The 11‐year mean minimizes the effect of solar variability – the brightness of the sun varies by a measurable amount over the sunspot cycle, which is typically of 10–12 years' duration.

There's an inevitable problem with trying to find trends in data that is subject to a great deal of random variability: unless the most recent point was a record high, it will always look like there's a downward trend. We're currently seeing that happen with the global temperature record, where the warmest year ever recorded, 1998, is receding into the past. As a result, reports of "global cooling" are appearing in the popular press, and smaller percentages of the US public are confident that the globe is warming. Unfortunately, all of this seems to be a misdirection; the Associated Press has performed a statistical sanity check on the claims of global cooling, and found that there's little to them.

As the AP report notes, the cries of global cooling have become increasingly obvious, with the phrase appearing on the cover of the new book Super Freakonnomics and the BBC asking "What happened to global warming?"

But, as we noted in February, the recent drop in temperatures has been so small that 2008 was still the 10th warmest on record. Other recent years were equally warm or warmer, while the hottest year on record, 1998, was unusually warm compared to the surrounding years. In fact, if you started tracking trends in either 1997 or 1999, you saw a general increase in global temperatures.

The AP went beyond this analysis by sending out temperature data to four statisticians, without informing them what the data represented, and asked them to identify any trends in the data. Apparently, none of them saw any sign of global cooling. All of them detected the upward trend that is apparent when periods longer than a decade are examined, while the ups-and-downs of the last decade appear similar to the statistical noise that occurs in other decades within the data set. One of the statisticians is even quoted as saying that seeing a downward trend in recent years involves "people coming at the data with preconceived notions."

Record Snow WORLD WIDE. Record LOWS World wide.

It snowed more this year (2009) than ever before in recorded history?

It was colder this year (2009) than ever before in recorded history?

There's always record lows and record snowfall at various points on the earth. Big picture.

Are you talking about a La Nina year being a cooling trend? I think I'm finally seeing where you are coming from. You are saying the last couple of years weren't as hot as the hottest year ever recorded so we are in a cooling trend. Pretty scientific.

Earlier this year (2009), climate scientists in two peer-reviewed publications statistically analyzed recent years' temperatures against claims of cooling and found them not valid.

Not all skeptical scientists make the flat-out cooling argument.

"It pretty much depends on when you start," wrote John Christy, the Alabama atmospheric scientist who collects the satellite data that skeptics use. He said in an e-mail that looking back 31 years, temperatures have gone up nearly three-quarters of a degree Fahrenheit (four-tenths of a degree Celsius). The last dozen years have been flat, and temperatures over the last eight years have declined a bit, he wrote.

Oceans, which take longer to heat up and longer to cool, greatly influence short-term weather, causing temperatures to rise and fall temporarily on top of the overall steady warming trend, scientists say. The biggest example of that is El Nino.

El Nino, a temporary warming of part of the Pacific Ocean, usually spikes global temperatures, scientists say. The two recent warm years, both 1998 and 2005, were El Nino years. The flip side of El Nino is La Nina, which lowers temperatures. A La Nina bloomed last year and temperatures slipped a bit, but 2008 was still the ninth hottest in 130 years of NOAA records.

Of the 10 hottest years recorded by NOAA, eight have occurred since 2000, and after this year it will be nine because this year is on track to be the sixth-warmest on record.

The current El Nino is forecast to get stronger, probably pushing global temperatures even higher next year, scientists say. NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt predicts 2010 may break a record, so a cooling trend "will be never talked about again."

Hey Peter,

I am NOT just pointing out the East Coast. Check it out for yourself my friend. Record cold and snowfall world wide. Rome got more snow this year than they have had in years. It's all over the place.

Now of course there are those still being paid, mostly by the American Government to excuse this away. El NiƱo and all that. But even some of the Global Warming propagandists are telling us, "Yeah, OK. The World hasn't show any significant increase in Global Tempts since,,

Some say 95
Some 98
As you pointed out,
Some 2000,
Some 2005.

We are in a COLLING Cycle. A NATURAL Cooling cycle Pete. They are trying to explain it away, "Just wait, Global warming will come back with vengeance." Yeah, about June July and August I bet. {smile}

I've seen the graphs. I have also seen where they fudged the numbers, hind cooler tempts, etc.

Look Pete. All these computer models are great, and the "Evidence" and "Predictions" that they spout out are great. Problem is, garbage in, garbage out. I could get a computer to say anything I want, depending on the "facts" and parameters I put in.

You see Pete, this is why Global Warming is like a Religion.

http://opntalk.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Religion%20of%20Global%20Warming

No matter how many FACTS are proven to the contrary, people are still going to worship at the feet of the GWBS Alter. They will give up all they have, even their own FREEDOMS, in the name of salvation. In this case, saving the Earth.

The sad thing is. If I started today, I could create Carlockism. I would be able to convince a small number of people to follow me. Long after I'm gone, there still would be Carlockians and Petetites running around. People NEED to feel important and needed. They need to feel as if they have a purpose. To feel as if they belong.

Rememeber, the Global Warming Scamers even told their underlings to use Phycology to Brainwash people into thinking Green.

The new group is about to launch the most ambitious U.S. marketing campaign ever on climate change, at a cost of more than $100 million a year for three years, to focus on the urgency of the problem and solutions.

The need for a different approach is apparent, environmentalists say.

"We've come up against a brick wall with Americans," says Lee Bodner, executive director of ecoAmerica, an environmental group based in Washington, D.C. Despite Americans' widespread familiarity with global warming, "only a small group are changing their behavior."

There's little research on how to lower people's energy use, but early evidence suggests that many people will change if:

• They think others similar to themselves are jumping on the "green" bandwagon.

• They get frequent positive feedback for effort.

• They feel able to make a difference by taking concrete steps.

• They think their children will be harmed by global warming, or children encourage the family to lead a greener life.

This is to good folks. They are TELLING the rest in the movement. Here are the talking points. Read this again. "You have to convince people that they are not just sheeple. That everyone is doing it, so they should too. Make sure you give them a pat on the back when they do. Make them feel that they are now a good person. That they matter. That they are heroes for doing this. They also have to "believe" that THEY can solve it. Don't be going around telling them that there is no hope. Make sure they know 'we can do it.' If all else fails, tell them their kids are going to DIE. That they will blame them for not doing anything about it. Scare them into submission if need be."

What if the people ask for proof? "Just tell them that all the Scientist agree that it is real, and they are smarter then them, so they need just accept it. Any Scientists that say it's not real are just kooks, or bought off by big oil."

This is the very definition of Scaryence. Scare Science. "Don't forget, if all else fails, the KIDS. Bring up the kids."

It has worked in small numbers Pete. My Neighbor is a Believer. No matter how much "Evidence" is debunked or proven to be fabricated, there she is, awaiting her next commandment from the likes of Al Gore.

That is what people like Al Gore, Obama, and the Libs in Congress are hoping for. This way, people will ACCEPT their Socialistic agendas. They will welcomely give up their freedoms. They will stand in line to give them their MONEY.

Problem is, all this has been and continues to be proven FALSE. It's a SCAM. It's a Hoax. It's SILLY.

With all this coming out, it's just silly for the American Media to still talk about this as real. I actually just saw a picture of POLAR BEARS floating on Ice.{Sigh} Next thing you know, they'll show us fish swimming. You think?

Like I said. It's just plain silly now. There is no Man-Made Threat called Global Warming. Sorry.
Peter

Peter said...

To feel as if they belong.

I'm pretty much anti-social.

And where are the numbers to show a cooling trend since 1980?

Any numbers.

Please.

I wanna believe.

A COOLING TREND.

Now you kind of sound like one of those "kooks". ALL the numbers put into those computer things by EVERYONE are bogus.

Just a bit irrational.

Anyway. I think the earth's average surface temperature has been increasing over the last 50 or so years and you think the earth's average surface temperature has been decreasing over the last several years (which is true, and it was also cooler today than it was yesterday which was cooler than the day before. Huh. Cooling trend.) and we are merely in a natural cycle (undeniably, for sure, without question, absolutely), while I believe there might, possibly, maybe be some correlation between the BUNCHES of data showing an increase in average surface temperature of the earth to human beings.

I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and you just keep doing what you're doing. It's really a shame.

Peter said...

What's the difference?

Apparently, Americans in general don't believe in global warming. Don't believe they have any responsibility for stewardship. Believe God put earth here for us to exploit. Don't believe you, personally, have any affect on the environment. Don't believe they have to clean up after themselves. Believe in endless supplies of natural resources. Don't believe in any science that doesn't support their lifestyle (SUVs, plastics, creationism...)

So... you are following, like a sheep, this crowd. A small minority of the rest of the earth. It just seems like a weak argument. If you are saying a small minority are trying to herd up people (sheople) to follow a certain agenda... It seems like you are talking about yourself.
