Nifong Gets ONE Day
Hey folks,
Happy Saturday to you. I came into the OPNTalk office and what is the first headline I see? “Judge sends Duke prosecutor to jail.” I remember what I said a little while back.
“Yes folks, that whole mess, that everyone knew from the beginning was bogus, is over. So how do they get compensated for all that they went through? Does the accuser of the Prosecutor have to paid a price for what they put these boys through? They should. The accuser should also be facing charges.”
Then on Saturday, June 16, when we learned he had been dis-barred, I said this.
“This is a good day for the Justice System. He should have known this was bogus. From withholding the DNA evidence, the “victim” changing her story three or four times, to the “victim’s “ own witness saying it was bogus. He should have never pursued this case.”
So I’ll admit, I was happy to see the headline and others like it.
Here is a guy that attempted to destroy these young men’s lives. The whole time, EVERYONE knowing this “victim” was lying. No REAL evidence. Yet, here he was calling these young men rapists. Saying that they were guilty. No questions about it.
Now, you all know the story. So today he get what he deserves. Jail. Or does he? According to the AP -Judge sends Duke prosecutor to jail,
Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong charged forward with a strident determination that the guilty would end up in jail. Ultimately, the since-disgraced former prosecutor only succeeded at putting himself behind bars.
I can hear many of you cheering that statement. I did. HOWEVER!
Nifong was sentenced Friday to a single day in jail, having been held in criminal contempt of court for lying to a judge during his pursuit of rape charges against the three falsely accused lacrosse players.
Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith III could have sentenced Nifong, who had already been stripped of his law license and had resigned from office, to as many as 30 days in jail and given him a fine as high as $500. Instead, he opted for a largely symbolic punishment — the public humiliation of sending a prosecutor to jail — that he said would help protect the integrity of the justice system.
He should have gotten the whole 30. Why not? He actually destroyed these young lives. STRICTLY for political gain. Remember he was up for re-election. The whole 30 would have made the point.
Now he apologized. He said,
"It was never my intention to mislead this or any other court," Nifong said. "I certainly apologize to the court at this time for anything I might have said that was not correct."
Meanwhile? These kid’s lives have been changed forever. Believe me, there will STILL be some out there that believe that these “spoiled white kids, raped this poor black girl and got away with it.” There is no changing that. No fixing that.
Sorry Mikey, there really are some things that “Sorry” can’t fix.
