Can Coffee Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes?

Well, here we go again.

Hey folks,

Lets see. Coffee =

Good at preventing some Cancers.
Reduce the odds of having a Stroke.
May reduce Blood Pressure.

But WAIT.....

Coffee may CAUSE Cancer.
May RISE Blood Pressure.
You MAY hear Voices in your head.

The Stroke thing?

Jury is still out on that one. For now. My point is, one day it is GOOD for you, the next it's BAD. Now we learn that Coffee may actually help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes? According to Health Day - Can Coffee Really Thwart Type 2 Diabetes?By By Serena Gordon

THURSDAY, Jan. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Your morning "cup of Joe" may do more than deliver the jolt you need to get going -- it may also help you stave off type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests.

But, before you pour yourself a second cup know this: The study authors said their research was done with cell cultures and there's no proof yet that coffee has any ability to keep type 2 diabetes at bay.
{Laughing} So WHY DO THE STORY!?!?!? Why publish the Study? I love it when I read stupid stuff like this. The Headline: "Can Coffee Really Thwart Type 2 Diabetes?" Second Paragraph? No proof whatsoever if it will or won't?

Past research has suggested a link between coffee and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, and now Chinese researchers behind the new study think they may know why that may be so. They found three major compounds in coffee that may provide potentially beneficial effects: caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and caffeine.
But wait,,, It DOES?

"These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of coffee consumption on type 2 diabetes mellitus may be partly due to the ability of the major coffee components and metabolites to inhibit the toxic aggregation of hIAPP [human islet amyloid polypeptide]," Ling Zheng, professor of cellular biology at Wuhan University in China, and colleagues wrote.

Human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) is a substance normally found in the pancreas, according to background information in the study. Sometimes, however, abnormal protein deposits (toxic aggregation) arise from hIAPP. These abnormal deposits (amyloid fibrils) are found in people with type 2 diabetes, the study authors said.

The researchers wondered if blocking formation of these deposits could help prevent or treat type 2 diabetes, the more common form of the blood sugar disorder. The next step would be to find a substance that might prevent these deposits.

In 2009, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that people who drank the most coffee seemed to have the lowest risk of developing type 2 diabetes. That study reported that with each cup of coffee consumed daily, the risk of type 2 diabetes dropped by 7 percent.
OK. Lets see, average of 12 Cups per Pot, Three to four Pots a Day. I consume somewhere around 36 to 48 cups a DAY? Well, ONE of my cups is like 2 to 3 normal ones, but still. So? Reduce 7% per cup? So my Percent of NOT getting Type 2 diabetes is like 252 percent?

So, the researchers behind the new study conducted laboratory experiments to see if compounds found in coffee could inhibit the production of the abnormal protein deposits associated with hIAPP.

Caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and caffeine -- the three most common components in coffee, the study authors said -- helped reduce the abnormal protein deposits, but caffeic acid appeared most effective.

"Our results suggest that caffeic acid had the greatest effects in the major components of coffee. The rankings for beneficial effects of coffee compounds against the toxic hIAPP aggregation are caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and caffeine," Zheng and study co-author Kun Huang, professor of biological pharmacy at the Huazhong University of Science & Technology in Wuhan, explained in an email interview.

Because decaffeinated coffee contains even higher levels of caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid than caffeinated coffee, the beneficial effect may be even stronger for decaffeinated coffee, they added.
You can keep the Decaf. I only drink the High Octane stuff.

The investigators pointed out that this work has only been done in cells, so it's not clear if this is how coffee might help prevent diabetes in the body.

A U.S. diabetes expert was guardedly optimistic about the study's conclusions.

"Scientifically, this is a very nice paper, but it has its limitations," said Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president of medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association. "This was done in cells, not in animals or people. We also don't know if the [abnormal deposits arising from hIAPP] are the most important thing in the development of type 2 diabetes, or if it's something that develops later."

In addition, Fonseca said, the study that found a link between a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and coffee was an epidemiological study. That means the study couldn't prove cause and effect, only that there was an association between those two factors. It could be that people who drink coffee have other habits that lower their risk of diabetes.

The bottom line, said Fonseca, is it's way too soon to make any recommendations about drinking coffee to prevent diabetes. But, he added, "if you want to prevent diabetes, there are some very straightforward things to do. You can walk for 30 minutes most days of the week, and reduce calories a little bit and reduce your weight a little."
I have the Walking thing down. I will enjoy doing the Coffee thing. I will still go to the Gym. Oh wait,,this is not good news for me...

Zheng and Huang also pointed out that their study looked strictly at coffee. "Our study does not imply that the cream and sugar served with coffee will be beneficial for type 2 diabetes," they said.
All well, I guess I'll revert back to what I have always said. I'll Eat, or in this case, DRINK, what I want..{Smile} Be right back

Liver Cancer, Signs To Look For

Many people die every year of this.

Hey folks,

The big news this past week was the passing of Boxing Legend, Joe Frazier, of Liver Cancer. He was just 67 years old. This has prompted many to look into just what Liver Cancer really is. What causes it. How its Treated. ETC.

Many people die every year of this. You do not have to be Famous. Some of what you know is true, but some more information is always good to have. So lets look at Liver Cancer today, in today's Health and Science Segment.

Of course, when you have someone like Joe Frazier die of Cancer, it gets the World's attention. According to Yahoo Health - What Caused Joe Frazier's Liver Cancer? By Lisa Collier Cool Nov 08, 2011

Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier has lost his biggest fight—against liver cancer. Renowned for being the first to beat Muhammad Ali in the 1971 “Fight of the Century,” with a left hook seen around the world, Smokin’ Joe is also remembered for the dramatic rematch with his legendary rival, the 1975 Thrilla in Manila. The sports world was stunned to learn of the Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Famer’s death Monday at age 67—just one month after his diagnosis.

As recently as September, he was in Las Vegas signing autographs at the MGM Grand Hotel. Earlier this month, his health declined so rapidly that he reportedly began receiving hospice care. Here’s a look at the medical story behind his battle with liver cancer, which strikes about 24,000 Americans a year. Rates of the disease have been rising in the United States over the past several decades, the American Cancer Society reports, and, in other countries, it ranks as a leading cause of death.
I really do not have too much to add to this story. Check it out.

Who gets liver cancer?

The disease is about twice as common in men as women, with the highest rates among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and African Americans, followed by Native Americans and Latinos. The disease typically strikes people in their 60s, like Frazier.

What are the risk factors?

In the U.S., the #1 risk factor is infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Frazier’s family hasn’t announced if he had HCV, a chronic disease that affects more than 4 million Americans. If he did have hepatitis C, there are several ways he could have caught it. The disease is usually spread through exposure to the blood of an infected person, which could have occurred during a boxing match, since the brutal sport frequently causes blood loss.

Common ways the virus is transmitted include using contaminated needles for IV drug abuse, medical injections, tattooing, or sharing personal items, like razors, with an infected person. Getting a blood transfusion before 1992—when screening of the U.S. blood supply for the virus began—is another possible scenario, since he could have received one to treat boxing injuries in the 1970s. HCV can also be spread through unprotected sex, but sexual transmission is much less common than infection through exposure to tainted blood.

What else can trigger liver cancer?

In other countries, infection with hepatitis B virus is the most common risk factor. HBV is spread in similar ways, but has a higher rate of sexual transmission than HCV. Hepatitis B is more likely to spark noticeable symptoms, such as a flu-like illness and yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), while HCV can silently damage the liver over decades, sometimes leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Only a small percent of people with HBV become chronic carriers, while HCV frequently becomes a chronic infection. Other causes of liver cancer include heavy alcohol use, certain inherited metabolic diseases, diabetes (mainly in diabetics who drink heavily), obesity, exposure to toxic chemicals, and use of anabolic steroids, a particular risk factor for athletes.
So just to simplify it a bit. Causes?

HVC
Heavy Drinking of Alcohol
Inherited Metabolic Diseases
Diabetes
If you have Diabetes and Drink you INCREASE your Risk.
Exposure to Toxic Chemicals. {This COULD include Pesticides}
Use of Anabolic Steroids {Which is NOT something that is being attributed to Frazier}

What’s the prognosis for people with liver cancer?

The disease is often fatal within a year of diagnosis. Only 10 percent of people with all stages of the disease combined survive 5 years, and those with advanced disease, as seems to be the case with Frazier since he needed hospice care, the rate is only 2 percent, according to American Cancer Society.
Only a 10 percent Survival Rate? Please folks, pay attention to this.

What are the symptoms?

The main reason why liver cancer has such a poor prognosis is that it doesn’t have specific warning signs. It’s unusual for people with the disease to develop abdominal pain unless they have a very large tumor. Some patients have unexplained weight loss or fevers. When the disease reaches an advanced stage, patients may have sudden abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup, jaundice, or bleeding. During a medical exam, doctors may notice a tender or enlarged liver.

How is the disease diagnosed?

Compounding the difficulty is detecting this disease early, since it often doesn’t show up in routine blood tests, including tests of liver function. Tumors can be detected through imaging tests, like MRI and CT scans. If liver cancer is suspected, doctors will usually do a biopsy, followed by further imaging tests to determine the stage of the disease, if cancer is found.

What’s the treatment?

Treatments for liver cancer include surgery, a liver transplant, radiation therapy, freezing or heating cancer cells to kill them, and injecting chemotherapy drugs into the liver.

What are the best ways to prevent liver cancer?

You can reduce your risk by avoiding IV drug abuse, making sure that hygienic methods are used if you get a tattoo, limiting or avoiding alcohol consumption, not sharing personal items that might expose you to another person’s blood, such as toothbrushes and razors, maintaining a healthy weight, and practicing safe sex.
GREAT Job Lisa Collier Cool! Thanks for taking the time to Post this. Also see PubMed Health - A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia For even MORE information on Liver Cancer.

As I always say folks, if you have ANY questions, doubts, or concerns about your Health, PLEASE go see a Doctor. Early is best. Don't blow it off.

Aspirin: Not Just for Headaches Anymore

We all know about the Aspirin and Heart Connection. But Cancer?

Hey folks,

In Today's Health and Science Segment, I want to talk about Aspirin. Back in the Day, you got a Head Ache, you took Aspirin. Nowadays, when you get a Head Ache you have an array of choices. ALL claiming to be faster, stronger, and more long lasting than Aspirin. Some you need a Script for, some not. Some will make you Loopy, TRUST ME. Some will numb you. But MOST have MAJOR Side Effects.

If you have been around here for a Bit, you will remember when I had the Swine Flu. Or at least that is what they thought. I have NEVER been THAT sick for THAT long in my life. REALLY. I was Butt Naked for TEN DAYS Straight. Josh went to Grandmas. Laura had to keep working. So most of the time I was alone. The Doctors gave me this Liquid Controlled Substance Stuff. Not going to name it here. But I took it ONE time. ONCE was enough for me. My Wife, Niece, and Son Joshua, went to Miami for a Photo Shoot for a Foreign Magazine thing. I took this stuff and went to lay down. I kept hearing stuff. I would hear Texts. The Phone Ring. Nothing. No one there. Then I heard someone walking around the House. I went out to see who it was, No one. Not a single Soul. Once that wore off, I flushed it. That was more than enough for me.

At the time, I also had a handful of Pills to take multiple time a day. I ended up taking the Antibiotic, and ASPRIN for the Aches and Pains. I turned out just fine. No more hearing Sh,,uh, stuff.

So we know about Aspirin. Back in the day, it came in a Power form. It worked QUICK. Now in Pill form, they have learned that it has MANY Benefits, and very little draw backs. It also costs next to NOTHING. A while back, we learned that Aspirin could help those having a Heart Attack. Scientists and Doctors have discovered that an Aspirin Regimen is VERY Beneficial in so many ways.

Aspirin is used to relieve mild to moderate pain; reduce fever, redness, and swelling; and to help prevent blood from clotting. It is used to relieve discomfort caused by numerous medical problems, including headache, infections, and arthritis. It is also used to reduce the risk of a second heart attack or stroke. Larger doses of aspirin are used to treat gout.
So Aspirin GOOD. Side Effects?

Although side effects from aspirin are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

•upset stomach
•vomiting
•stomach pain

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

•ringing in the ears
•loss of hearing
•bloody or black stools
•wheezing
•difficulty breathing
•dizziness
•mental confusion
•drowsiness
•skin rash
However, ALL of these are EXTREMELY Rare and most of the time, MOST people will not have any Problems. HOWEVER. With ANY Medication, PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR FIRST. Now I know, I know, some Doctors are in bed with Big Drug, and some OVER PRESCRIBE expensive and unnecessary Medications. So a Second Opinion may be desirable. But if you start taking Aspirin, and you experience any of these, see a Doctor right away.

Today, there is even MORE good news for you about Aspirin. We all know about the Aspirin and Heart Connection. But Cancer? Yup. Cancer. According to Boston.com - Aspirin slashes cancer rate for those with hereditary risk Afp/Relaxnews / October 28, 2011

PARIS-AFP) - Long-term, daily doses of aspirin led to a fall of some 60 percent in cases of colorectal cancer among people with an inherited risk of this disease, the journal The Lancet reported on Friday.
That's right. Cheap, easily assessable, ASPIRIN.

The trial -- considered to be broad in sample and long in duration -- confirms evidence elsewhere that aspirin has a protective effect against cancer of the colon and rectum, it said.

The study enrolled patients with Lynch Syndrome, a fault in genes charged with cellular repair that leads to colorectal and other cancers.

Lynch Syndrome occurs in around one in 1,000 people and accounts for about one in 30 cases of bowel cancer, The Lancet said.

A total of 861 patients were randomly designated to take either two aspirins daily, for a dose of 600 mg, or a harmless dummy pill, known as a placebo, for at least two years. They were then regularly given colon exams.

When the data from this study were first examined in 2007, there was no difference in colorectal cancer incidence between the groups.

But things changed when the researchers checked again a few years later.

By this time, there had been 34 cases of colorectal cancer in the placebo group but 19 in the aspirin group -- a reduction in incidence of 44 percent.

The doctors then looked further at those patients (60 percent of the total) who had been taking the aspirin or the placebo beyond the two-year minimum.

In this sub-group, the figures were even more impressive.

There were 23 cancers in the placebo group, but only 10 in the aspirin group, amounting to a fall of 63 percent. The difference began to be seen after five years.

In the light of this discovery, further research has been launched to see what is the best dosage and duration of aspirin treatment.

"In the meantime, clinicians should consider aspirin prescription for all individuals judged to be at high risk of colorectal cancer, but taking appropriate measures to minimise adverse effects," says the paper, headed by John Burn, a professor of clinical genetics at Newcastle University, northeastern England.

Last year, a study also published in The Lancet, found that rates of cancer of the colon, prostate, lung, brain and throat were all reduced by daily aspirin use. For the colon, the risk over 20 years declined by 40 percent.

Many doctors recommend regular use of aspirin to lower the risk of heart attack, clot-related strokes and other blood flow problems. A downside of extended daily use is the risk of stomach problems.
Which we just discussed. Not a big threat. So now Aspirin could be a BIG Positive Player in the Fight against Cancer? GREAT! I think I'm going look into this myself.

I wasn't going to mention this. But I am. My Favorite Morning Show, The Conversation with Rich Stevens and Dave McBride were discussing this, this past Thursday, Friday? Friday Morning. {Where I got the interest in talking about Aspirin today} Rich was saying that he thinks that there is already a Cure for Cancer out there, but it is being suppressed because Cancer is a BILLION Dollar, if not TRILLION Dollar, Business. That is just a Fact. WAY back on Sunday, July 01, 2007, I was talking about a Possible Cure For HIV. OPNTalk - H.S. Potential cure for HIV I was answering a Question that News Dude Dave actually ASKED just this past Friday. Basically WORD for WORD.

“That is completely ridiculous Pete. No one wants to keep Cancer and HIV around. They are trying to find cures for them. You cannot say it’s about money. They cured those diseases of the past. Why would they not do it today?”

Excellent question. Think about it. You already know the answer. Those diseases of the past were CONTAGIOUS. A lot of them through the air. Cancer? HIV is contagious, but not on as broad a scale. In a lot of cases, HIV, it contracted by ones ACTIONS. Get the point?
Then, Remember back on Sunday, November 29, 2009 I posted this. OPNTalk - New Method Discovered To Kill Cancer I said this.

Of course it can. Why is this not making Mainstream News? Why are there not FAILED Government Programs that are being shut down and the financing of these FAILED programs being diverted to THIS Program immediately. Why other than the fact, most, most likely, have never heard of this, are there not PRIVATE Investors lining up to fund this?

Think of the savings in Healthcare. No more long term care. No more, in the long run, no more or REDUCED need for Chemo. No more long term Medication need? A person, in the future, maybe able to go in after diagnosis, have this disc implanted, and their own bodies can heal themselves. Think of the Billions Saved in,,,Oh. Perhaps I just answered my own question.
So I'm with Rich on this one. And the MANY of you out there that wonder the same thing. Something as simple and cheap as Aspirin, may be a MAJOR Player in the fight against Cancer? A few Cents vs, a couple of Hundred Dollars per Pill? This is GREAT NEWS!!!! Seriously. Like I said, being in a high risk category myself for BOTH Heart Disease and Cancer, I'm going to seriously look into this further.

Now It's Official, Cigarettes Should Be Banned

Or, this is the runner up for the Idiot of the Week.

Hey folks,

You chose. Idiot, or should we now officially Ban ALL Cigarettes. Now we have been Talking Cigarettes here for some time. They have already Banned some flavors, the Word "Light," ETC.

Most recently, we have been talking about Second Hand Smoke We talked about those that say it's bad, and those that say it's not.

Well, FORGET ALL THAT!! Now, just ONE Cigarette is bad enough to KILL YOU. Yes folks, Just ONE! In our Health and Science Segment this week, we turn to the Expert {Yeah I know} in the field to talk about this. According to the AP - Surgeon general: 1 cigarette is 1 too many

WASHINGTON (AP) — Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking — or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke — could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.

Lung cancer is what people usually fear from smoking, and yes, that can take years to strike. But Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.
Just one PUFF! EVERY ORGAN!!! You are going to DIE!!! Just one Cigarette. No. Screw that. She just said just one PUFF! One Drag. Whatever.

Or the one that triggers someone else's: "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can," she said.
Yeah, just ignore the other Studies that say Second Hand Smoke is no threat. Forget the fact that for YEARS, they have been telling us that long term Smoking can and most likely WILL kill you. Now JUST ONE DRAG OF ONE CIGARETTE could kill you. Why are they still LEGAL?
About 443,000 Americans die from tobacco-caused illnesses every year. While the smoking rate has dropped dramatically since 1964, when the first surgeon general's report declared tobacco deadly, progress has stalled in the past decade. About 46 million adults — one in five — still smoke, and tens of millions more are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. The government had hoped to drop the smoking rate to 12 percent by this year, a goal not only missed but that's now been put off to 2020.

Thursday's report is the 30th issued by the nation's surgeons general to warn the public about tobacco's risks.

"How many reports more does Congress need to have to say that cigarettes as a class of products ought to be banned?" asked well-known nicotine expert Dr. K. Michael Cummings of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, who helped to review the report. "One-third of the patients who are in our hospital are here today because of cigarettes."
That's my question. Why not BAN them all together. They are EVIL. Just one drag, and "Da,da,da,da,dant,da,dant,da,da,da,da" They will be carrying you off. But really? "One-third of the patients who are in our hospital are here today because of cigarettes?"

Still, this newest report is unusual because it devotes more than 700 pages to detail the biology of how cigarette smoke accomplishes its dirty deeds — including the latest genetic findings to help explain why some people become more addicted than others, and why some smokers develop tobacco-caused disease faster than others.

There is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke, whether you deliberately inhale it or are a nonsmoker who breathes in other people's fumes, the report concludes. Nor is there evidence yet to tell if efforts to develop so-called safer cigarettes really will pan out.

But more recently it's become clear that some of the harms — especially those involving the heart — kick in right away, said Dr. Terry Pechacek of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That means social smoking, the occasional cigarette at a party, can be enough to trigger a heart attack in someone whose arteries already are silently clogged, he said.
So people that already HAVE Health Problems? I love this next part. Get this.

"Too often people think the occasional social cigarette is not so dangerous, when in fact this report says yes, it is," he said.
{Laughing, banging hand on desk} "Too often people think the occasional social cigarette is not so dangerous, when in fact this report says yes, it is," This report says so. See? See? This report says it is. See?

So is breathing secondhand smoke. When Pueblo, Colo., banned smoking in all public places in 2003, the number of people hospitalized for heart disease plummeted 41 percent in just three years, the report found.
Any other factors? Like Healthier Eating? Exercise? ETC.?

Why? Cigarette smoke immediately seeps into the bloodstream and changes its chemistry so that it becomes more sticky, allowing clots to form that can squeeze shut already narrowed arteries, the report explains. That's in addition to the more subtle long-term damage to blood vessels themselves, making them more narrow. And no one knows how little it takes to trigger that clotting.

Kicking the habit lets your body start healing, Benjamin stressed: "It's never too late to quit but the sooner you quit the better. Even if you're 70, 80 years old and you're a smoker, there's still benefit from quitting."
Well, if you are 70 or 80 and have been smoking for a while, then I would assume that it is NOT going to negatively effect you. Now is it?

Look. You all know I quit. But this is just nonsense. Seriously. Now one Drag on ONE Cigarette can kill you? It can, the report SAYS SO. {Laughing} Then I say BAN them all together.

Naked Scanners Cause Cancer

Health and Science for Sunday 112110

Hey folks,

Alright, Part Two. The TSA are out of control as you have already seen. But what about those Scanners? Are they safe? Not according to a growing number of Scientists and Doctors. According to one of many in the "New Media" reporting this, since the Mainstream Media is not, Beyond the Curtain - Big Sis Caught Lying To American People
Dr Michael Love, who runs an X-ray lab at the department of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at the Johns Hopkins school of medicine. Love told AFP two days ago that “statistically someone is going to get skin cancer from these X-rays”.

“…we have a situation at the airports where people are so eager to fly that they will risk their lives in this manner,” he added.
According to some other assessments I have seen, the risk of you getting Cancer from Smoking is LESS than going through these Machines.

According to other numerous real “independent” scientists who continue to speak out over the health hazards associated with the x-ray technology, the body scanners are far from safe.

John Sedat, a University of California at San Francisco professor of biochemistry and biophysics and member of the National Academy of Sciences tells CNet that the machines have “mutagenic effects” and will increase the risk of cancer. Sedat previously sent a letter to the White House science Czar John P. Holdren, identifying the specific risk the machines pose to children and the elderly.

The letter stated:

“it appears that real independent safety data do not exist… There has not been sufficient review of the intermediate and long-term effects of radiation exposure associated with airport scanners. There is good reason to believe that these scanners will increase the risk of cancer to children and other vulnerable populations.”
Or of course, you can chose to have them Molested.
The TSA has repeatedly stated that going through the machines is equal to the radiation encountered during just two minutes of a flight. However, this does not take into account that the scanning machines specifically target only the skin and the muscle tissue immediately beneath.

The scanners are similar to C-Scans and fire ionizing radiation at those inside which penetrates a few centimeters into the flesh and reflects off the skin to form a naked body image.

The firing of ionizing radiation at the body effectively “unzips” DNA, according to scientific research by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The research shows that even very low doses of X-ray can delay or prevent cellular repair of damaged DNA, yet pregnant women and children will be subjected to the process as new guidelines including scanners are adopted.

The Inter-Agency Committee on Radiation Safety concluded in their report on the matter that governments must justify the use of the scanners and that a more accurate assessment of the health risks is needed.

Pregnant women and children should not be subject to scanning, according to the report, adding that governments should consider “other techniques to achieve the same end without the use of ionizing radiation.”

“The Committee cited the IAEA’s 1996 Basic Safety Standards agreement, drafted over three decades, that protects people from radiation. Frequent exposure to low doses of radiation can lead to cancer and birth defects, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” reported Bloomberg.

Scientists at Columbia University also entered the debate recently, warning that the dose emitted by the naked x-ray devices could be up to 20 times higher than originally estimated, likely contributing to an increase in a common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma which affects the head and neck.

“If all 800 million people who use airports every year were screened with X-rays then the very small individual risk multiplied by the large number of screened people might imply a potential public health or societal risk. The population risk has the potential to be significant,” said Dr David Brenner, head of Columbia University’s centre for radiological research.
But what choice do you have? Get this potentially dangerous Scan where you are FULLY exposed, in more ways than one, or be Molested. Sexually Assaulted according to the LAW. Well, my friends, you DO have another choice. Do not fly. Fight to have this repealed and removed. Europe avoided this. We can rid ourselves from it. Sue, Protest, Boycott. Eventually, someone will have to bring Commonsense and Logic to this mess. Sanity will prevail.

Pictures Of Aborted Babies On Planned Parenthood Doors

Pictures of Aborted Babies on the "Morning After Pill."

Hey folks,

"Hey there Pete. I know that you stopped smoking. At least I think you did. But you have always been as smoking advocate. I'm just wondering what you think of this."
I do not know if I would call myself a Smoking Advocate. I am all about FREEDOM. It's Legal. The Government makes a Boat Load of money on the Taxes. It is a product for Adults. If you chose to smoke, then it's YOUR choice. It's called Freedom.

There is NO, til this very day, NO, absolute Proof that second Hand Smoke caused ANYTHING but annoyance to others. I know, I know. They have told the lie so often most just accept it as fact. Is it bad for you? Yup. Should you refrain from it? Yup. If you never start, should you never start? Yup. Is it hard to quit? Of course.

Smoking is bad for you. It DOES cause sickness and disease in some people. It is a Crapshoot. A Gamble. Like playing Russian Roulette. Does it mean that if you smoke you WILL die of some hideous, and horrifying disease? No. But there is a better chance of it than if you do not smoke.

That's not good enough for the Liberal busybodies out there. Those that think that they know better than you what is best for you. No. They NOW want to put obscene pictures on Pacts of Cigarettes. Here is the Link: AOL Health - Feds Want Corpses, Rotting Teeth on Cigarette Packages

(Nov. 10) -- Images of corpses, rotting teeth and diseased lungs will take up half the space on a pack of cigarettes, under federal proposals unveiled today.

The graphic new labels are designed to scare smokers into quitting by showing what can happen to them. The warnings are required under a law passed last year that gave the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate tobacco products.

The FDA is proposing a new requirement that cigarette packs carry larger, graphic warning labels to cover half of the package -- both front and back.
Click through to see some examples of the labels.

The proposed warnings can be seen on the FDA website. Among the most brutal: a corpse with a toe tag; stained, rotten teeth in a mouth with a gaping sore; babies surrounded by cigarette smoke; and a set of diseased, blackened lungs shown next to a pair of healthy, pink ones.

"Today marks an important milestone in protecting our children and the health of the American public," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
OK, so they want to put these picture on Packs of cigarettes to show what MIGHT happen to you if you smoke. To Show the reality of Smoking. OK. Then LETS show the reality of another CHOICE. Abortion.

Yup. I'll be all for the warning photos on Cigarettes, that depict what COULD happen to you if you smoke too much, as long as they start posting pictures of Aborted babies, on the doors of Planned Parenthood. What about on the "Morning After Pill?" This is not what COULD happen. This is WHAT DOES HAPPEN. This is the end result of THAT choice. You want to deal with Reality. Then LETS deal with Reality.

Yes it is true that some who smoke will get sick. I know. Believe me. But it is NOT true that EVERYONE who smokes will get sick. Look at someone like George Burns. My Friend Vera. Others out there. These folks smoked their whole lives and lived into their 90s and into their 100s. Yet, some people that have NEVER Smoked, still die of Cancer. Like I said, it a Crapshoot.

However, if a Woman goes into Planned Parenthood, and says I no longer want this Baby, well, the end result IS the Death and Destruction of the LIFE. I know, some think showing the pictures are hideous and outrageous. Why? THAT is dealing in Reality. That IS what happens. That IS the end result of that choice. So what's the problem?

OH. I see. It's only offensive if you do something to offend Liberals. Smokers are too stupid to know that it's bad for them. People are too stupid to know what they should and shouldn't eat. You are too stupid to know what kind of light bulbs to put in your house. Too stupid to know what kind of Car to drive, and what temperature to keep your home. But those who willing seek to MURDER their own Child? Well, they need not see those hideous pictures. "No, no, no. That is just propaganda and an attempt to brainwash some poor innocent Woman into keeping her Child. That's just wrong. You should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting such a thing." {Sigh}No that is showing Reality.

You're all for it for Smokers. Why not for Murdered Babies? THAT would be showing Reality.

CT Scan Cuts Smokers' Lung Cancer Deaths by 20%

Some GOOD News For Smokers.

Hey folks,

As you all know, I was a Smoker since age 14. I Smoked the real deal. The Standard, harshest, strongest Cigarettes out there. No. I'm not naming the brand, but they come in a Red and White Box.

I Smoked about a Pack and a half a day until I was around 26 I think. I quit. For Three and a half years I did well. An occasional Dream, urge, whatever, but I stayed steadfast. Until one day, perhaps the, most definitely one of the, worst days of my life. A friend of mine was Smoking and I remember it like it was yesterday.

"Hey, you think I can get one of those?"

"Uh, Sure? Are you sure?"

"Yeah. After Three and a half years, one is not going to kill me."

Well? In about 30 minutes, there I was, at the store, buying my own pack. It was as if I never quit. I got up to two to THREE Packs a day. I smoked until Last Year without much thought about it. Then I got sick. I went to the Doctors and they found this little annoying lymph node in my Lung. I was also diagnosed with moderate COPD and The early stages of Emphysema.

Well, I just do not accept all that. I have a Son, one on the way. A Wife. A Niece. Family. Responsibility. I do not have time to get sick. I do not have time to deal with stupidity. So I quit smoking again. Not to mention the MONEY I have saved buying the stuff, I feel much better.

One thing I DID learn, is that the Second time, was SO MUCH HARDER than I could have ever imagined. Now I understand when some people say, "I just can quit." they are telling the truth. A lot of the time, MOST of the time, when someone is diagnosed with a Smoking related Sickness, it is too late to do much about it. Until NOW. According to Live Science - CT Scan Cuts Smokers' Lung Cancer Deaths by 20%
Screening heavy smokers with a computed tomography (CT) scan can catch tumors early and reduce deaths from lung cancers by 20 percent, according to a new clinical trial.

"Overall, this study provides strong evidence that older patients who are at high-risk of developing lung cancer could benefit from CT screening, and that's a significant finding," study researcher Dr. Claudine Isaacs, a director at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, said in a statement.

The National Lung Screening Trial study enrolled 53,000 men and women ages 55 to 74 starting in August 2002. Participants were required to have a smoking history of at least 30 "pack-years," which is calculated by multiplying the average number of cigarette packs smoked a day by the number of years the person has smoked. They were either current or former smokers who had no symptoms or history of lung cancer.
I had more than 30 Pack Years. I could have done this. But this is GREAT News folks.
Researchers separated the people in the study into two groups: one received three annual low-dose helical CT scans - helical scans may give doctors a better view internal tissues than regular CT scans - and the other received three annual standard chest X-rays.

The people in the study were screened when they first enrolled in the trial, and at the end of their first and second years on the trial, and then researchers followed up with them five years later.

Of the people who received the CT scans, 356 had died from lung cancer as of Oct. 20, whereas 442 people in the X-ray group had died of the disease, according to the study.

This means the scans reduced lung cancer deaths by 20.3 percent, the researchers said.
Now of course, some have to pooh-pooh any possible advances.
There are several disadvantages of using a CT scan, however, the National Cancer Institute said. The screening process produces false-positives, leading people to seek treatments for suspicious findings that turn out not to be cancer - an anxiety-inducing and costly endeavor.

There are also negative health effects of repeated exposure to radiation, as well as potential surgical and medical complications in people who may need extra testing to diagnose lung cancer.
I do not know about you, but if getting these tests, reduce my risk of DYING from Cancer by %20, then SIGN ME UP. But the COST is what some will argue. Like Obamacare. You will probably NOT be allowed to get this under Obamacare. It would be deemed too expensive.
A more complete analysis of the results is set to be released in the next few months, researchers said.

The study was published Nov. 3 in the journal Radiology.
Can't wait to read it. I'm judging nothing, nor anyone. If you Smoke, then you Smoke. Try the "Electronic Cigarette," it REALLY does work. Or try the Patch, ask your Doctor if any of the Medication out there will be right for you. Do whatever it takes, just try to stop Smoking folks. It really is not worth it in the long run. But do NOTHING until you are mentally ready for it, or NOTHING will work. YOU have to want it for YOU.

Cancer Losing It's Battle

"Lost his battle to Cancer."

Hey folks,

We hear all the time, those Famous and not so much, "We sorry to report, he / she lost their battle to Cancer. So and so died this day at so and so O'clock, after a long battle with this kind of Cancer."

Well we seem to have some good news. According to HealthDay - As Science Unlocks Secrets, Cancer Rates Fall by Dennis Thompson – Fri Sep 24, 11:48 pm ET Cancer may finally be losing the battle. Lets look at this in today's Health and Science Segment.

(HealthDay News) -- Cancer is one of the most feared diseases on the planet, and the second leading cause of death in the United States.

But medical science is slowly conquering cancer, according to an assessment of cancer trends produced by the U.S. National Cancer Institute in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries.

Death rates and diagnosis rates from all cancers combined are declining significantly, both for men and women overall, and for most racial and ethnic populations within the United States, the report found.

New diagnoses for all types of cancer combined decreased an average of almost 1 percent a year from 1999 to 2006, and deaths attributed to cancer decreased 1.6 percent a year from 2001 to 2006, according to the report, an annual evaluation released each December.
Now I understand that 1 percent in minuscule. But it is FAR better than the Cancer Rate INCREASING. This really IS good news.

Doctors predict that the rates will keep falling because research has begun unlocking the secrets of how different cancers begin and develop.

"We're beginning to understand that each cancer has an individual pathway to development," said Dr. Alan G. Thorson, president of the American Cancer Society, a clinical professor of surgery and director of colon and rectal surgery at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. "We know now how to look at cancer, find its source and go for that source, which makes all the difference in the world."

The decrease in cancer incidence and deaths has been driven mainly by advances in detecting and treating the major types of cancer in men and women, according to the report.

Incidence and death rates are declining for lung, prostate and colorectal cancer in men, and for breast and colorectal cancer in women, the report said. Also, increases in the other major cancer for women, lung cancer, have tapered off, with rates remaining stable since 2003.
The change in Lifestyles also have to play a part in this. More and more people are quiting Smoking, eating healthier, exercising more. Drugs and Treatment are advancing, but so are we.

There's no single explanation for the decrease in these major cancers, doctors said. Rather, the decreases are chalked up to effective detection and treatment tools designed for each form of cancer.

For example, public tobacco policy has been crucial in reducing lung cancer rates in men and leveling them out for women, said Dr. Brenda Edwards, associate director of the Surveillance Research Program at the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

"The biggest risk factor for lung cancer is smoking," Edwards said. "We've begun to see the impact of efforts to limit tobacco use." She noted that the reduction in smoking rates has accompanied laws designed to prohibit public smoking.

Colorectal cancer has decreased because of increased efforts to screen for the cancer using colonoscopy and other methods, Thorson said. Colonoscopy has made colorectal cancer completely preventable, he explained, because doctors can remove precancerous polyps from the colon during the procedure.
Also people eating right. Things that will NOT clog up the Colon. More and more people are learning ways to cleanse the Liver also. Which is another place in the body that stores bad stuff that can make you sick in the long run.

A number of factors account for the decrease in breast cancer rates. Mammograms are providing earlier detection of breast cancers, and earlier detection most often results in more successful treatment, Thorson said.

On top of that, fewer women are using hormone replacement medications after menopause, and "the sudden shift away from hormone replacement therapies in women affected incidence rates," Edwards said.

Prostate cancer rates have fallen as the result of improved detection through the use of tests that measure the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in a man's blood, which can indicate cancer likelihood, and improved treatment procedures, Edwards said.

Both Edwards and Thorson believe the key to keeping cancer in decline involves molecular and genetic research that is unlocking the way cancer cells function.

"We're beginning to understand what's going wrong inside of the cells to make them behave in a bad manner," Thorson said. This type of research will result in targeted therapies that will attack cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone, he said.

Increased understanding of the human genome also will help in cancer prevention, Thorson said. Using knowledge of the genetics of cancer, doctors might soon be able to identify people who are at high risk for certain types of cancer and provide them with the tools to prevent its occurrence.

Other breakthroughs along the way also should help. For example, doctors are using vaccines to prevent the occurrence of cervical cancer in women and are researching ways other vaccines might stop other forms of cancer.

But Thorson said the biggest breakthroughs in cancer prevention could be ones that people undertake in their everyday lives.

If people begin eating right, exercising and avoiding bad habits such as smoking, then cancer rates will continue to fall, he explained.
Like I said. More on this is a second.

"We have the ability to significantly reduce cancer available right now," Thorson said. "Those are things we can do to prevent cancer, which is infinitely better than creating new ways to treat cancer once it's there."

"People forget how much power we do have right now through simple lifestyle changes," he added.
The liver is one of the most important Organs in the body when it comes to Detoxifying or getting rid of foreign substances or Toxins. Like the old saying goes, garbage in, garbage out. However, in some cases, garbage in, garbage STAYS in. The liver plays a key role in most Metabolic processes, especially Detoxification. The liver gets rid of harmful substances by a complex series of Chemical reactions. The role of these various Enzyme activities in the Liver is to convert fat soluble Toxins into water soluble substances that can be excreted in the urine or the bile depending on the particular characteristics of the end product.

You get many of these Toxic Chemicals in the fat you eat. This makes them difficult for the body to excrete. They get mixed up with the fatty acids and Proteins, some of which you body needs. So since your body needs them, it stores them, just like the good stuff. Toxins may be stored for years, being released slowly through time. Enough release at once or in combination, you can get sick. So it stands to reason, a Healthy Liver, can reduce the threat of Cancer and other Sicknesses and Diseases.

So as it turns out, between Healthier Lifestyles and GOOD Science, we are actually making advancements in the battle against Cancer. May the fight continue until we can finally say, "We have GREAT News, Cancer has lost it's battle to us. It died on so and so day."

Florida, Summer, Skin Cancer

Health and Science for Sunday 061310

Hey folks,

Summer is here in full swing. Last week was in the high 90s. All over the country though, summer is arriving, kids are getting out of school, and people are spending more and more time outdoors. Here in Sunny South Florida, you have to be cautious no matter what time of year, but of course, even more so in the Florida Summer. Why else do you think a lot of the Snow Birds leave. It's just too hot for them.

So every now and then, a little reminder is not a bad thing. I remember hearing a kid, I don't know, like 15 or 16, telling her Mom on a Beach I was at, "I don't need Sunblock. I already got burned. Can't burn again." Well, A - Not true. B- Getting a Sunburn is not the worst thing that can happen.

This new paper that just showed up at my home, Florida Health Care News, has an excellent article on this. Florida Health Care News - Skin Cancer: the Disease

Though melanoma remains one of the deadliest skin cancers on record, both its risk factors and preventative measures are often overlooked and underestimated.

Born and raised in Florida, Bill Phares knows a little something about spending time in the sun. In fact, he shares, as a boy growing up in the small town of Frostproof, it wasn’t uncommon to wear nothing but a bathing suit, day after sunny day. “We’d wake up in the morning and put those bathing suits on, and we were in them until nighttime came and it was time for bed.”
OK. I would LOVE to visit "Frostproof." What a GREAT name for a Town in Florida.

Of course, he adds, there was no sunscreen back then, and it wasn’t until he was in his late 50s that he started to pay attention to the effects of that early exposure. “I was blond-haired and blue-eyed as a youngster, and I realized I had to take care of my skin and get this stuff taken care of.”

Concerned about some large spots on his arm, which were further aggravated, he believes, by years of driving with that arm resting outside the window of his truck, Bill says he relied on word of mouth to guide him to the right dermatologist. “People said, Hey, there’s this guy, a young guy, and you ought to go see him . So I went to him and I just love him. Dr. Ioannides has one of those personalities that you just don’t find in many doctors.”

And the more he saw “Dr. I.,” the more Bill says he realized how much the doctor – and the entire staff at Treasure Coast Dermatology – stood apart from the typical dermatology practice.

Skin cancer affects doctors, too

For the doctors at Treasure Coast Dermatology, detecting and treating skin cancer is not just part of the job description; it is a passion rooted in personal experience.

At the age of 35, Jonathan Sanders, MD, JD, began his own battle against the disease – a battle he is convinced he won because of early detection. “I continue to be vigilant and undergo regular examinations to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself,” he stresses.

Similarly, more than 15 biopsies later, Tim Ioannides, MD, says he wishes he could travel back in time and make use of the advice he now gives his patients. “I was a bit of a beach bum in my younger years,” he shares. “Back then, it never occurred to me that all of that time in the sun would come back to burn me.”

This year, the doctors inform, tens of thousands of Americans will develop melanoma, which is the most deadly of all skin cancers. Particularly tragic, since the cancer is usually curable when discovered in its early stages, thousands of those diagnosed will die as a result of the disease. The most important factor, according to Drs. Ioannides and Sanders, is time; early detection is critical.

According to Dr. Ioannides, despite estimates showing that one person dies from melanoma every hour, people don’t take skin care seriously, and many mistakenly believe that skin cancer only affects those who spend a lot of time in the sun or in a tanning bed.

“Individuals should check themselves carefully in a mirror and look for skin tags, moles, or unusual spots on the body. When you find them,” he cautions, “run – don’t walk – to our office to be examined by a professional.”

Sometimes, the doctor notes, the mole or spot turns out to be nothing serious. “If it’s nothing,” he says, “you’ll feel much better. And if it’s something, your vigilance might just save your life.”

Upon visiting Treasure Coast Dermatology, patients will benefit from the most up-to-date knowledge available as well as state-of-the-art technology. Drs. Sanders and Ioannides perform Mohs Micrographic Surgery, the most advanced method for treating – and beating – skin cancer. In fact, studies show the success rate of Mohs surgery to be between 97 and 99.8 percent in patients with basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.

Regardless of how much time patients spend in the sun, the doctors at Treasure Coast Dermatology stress that everyone needs to take skin cancer prevention seriously and make sure they don’t become another melanoma statistic.

Treating patients, supporting community

Given his own long history of significant sun exposure, Bill says that Dr. Ioannides has performed many procedures in the last several years to improve the health of his skin. “I’ve had spots removed, surgically, and I’ve had them treated with liquid nitrogen to freeze them off,” he explains.

In addition, he says he is especially pleased with the doctor’s work when it comes to one of his more serious areas of sun damage. “My right ear was in dire need of help, so Dr. Ioannides did a skin graft. All the work he’s done on that ear, and it still looks like a regular, perfect ear. You wouldn’t know anything had happened to it.

“He has just taken excellent, excellent care of me. He always fusses at me for not wearing a hat as much as I should, and for not wearing long-sleeved shirts,” Bill says with a chuckle. “But that’s just the way I was raised.”

And even though he has learned that most of his current skin issues stem back to the sun exposure from his childhood, Bill reports that he has definitely gained more awareness about the time he spends in the sun these days. “Now, I try to remember sunscreen, and I try to wear a cap or a cowboy hat when I’m out. I used to think, Oh, the heck with it , but not anymore.”

To maintain his skin health, Bill shares that, “the doctor has gone over me with a fine-toothed comb, you might say, and he’s always looking out for any little skin issues that I might have.

“I really just enjoy going to see him. He’s not one that rushes you in, like you’re being run through an assembly line. He takes time with you and asks what concerns you have, what spots you want to have looked at, and if there’s anything he can do for you.”

Of course, Bill notes, Dr. Ioannides’ manner and expertise are only some of the reasons he truly enjoys going to Treasure Coast Dermatology. “He has the right staff there, I can grant you that. They’re what an old Florida boy would call top drawer . People just don’t get any better than that.”

For that reason, as someone with a preference for very early morning appointments, he shares that he often likes to bring the staff a little gift when he visits. “I stop and get a gallon of hand-squeezed orange juice and carry it in there. They just love that.”

And something that impresses Bill every bit as much as the fantastic personal care he receives is the way Dr. Ioannides, Dr. Sanders, and the Treasure Coast Dermatology staff involve themselves with the community. “Treasure Coast Dermatology supports the various sheriffs' offices in the area, particularly their K-9 units. They’re a big supporter of the Okeechobee County Fair and the National Day of the American Cowboy, and they contribute money so that hardworking high school athletes can afford to attend tournaments and showcase their abilities.

“In these tough times, there are kids who are working so hard in high school but their families just can’t afford to get them to these college scouting events. They’re out there doing car washes and trying to make money to go. Treasure Coast Dermatology contributes money to help them.

“It’s an amazing thing to me – people who are willing to give to others they don’t even know. Even things like county fairs and parades and stuff like that; those are for older people and the very young at heart. If you’re helping those things thrive, you’re giving back to the whole community.”

The doctors also hold an annual Patient Appreciation Day, Bill reports, a celebration in which the doctors and their staff feed and visit with more than a 1000 people. “They invite all of their patients to come, and it might even be as many as two thousand people. That’s something that ninety to ninety-five percent of doctors don’t even think about doing. Treasure Coast Dermatology is just phenomenal in the way they think about giving back."

In a nutshell, Bill couldn’t be more pleased and impressed with his doctor. “He’s just such a great guy, and a real leader in the community. I like doing business with people who care about the community,” he shares. “And it’s not that he does it because he feels like he has to. He does it because he wants to, and that’s the type of person he is. All of that is what brought me to see Dr. Ioannides.

“I’m just so glad I went to see him to start with. I highly recommend him to anybody.” FHCN - Brenda Klettke
So what IS Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

With the highest success rate of all skin cancer treatments, Mohs surgery is considered the most advanced and effective skin cancer treatment currently available. The procedure, which requires a physician to be specially trained in surgery, pathology and reconstruction, makes use of microscopic technology to trace the edges of the cancer, ensuring that all tumors are completely removed, down to the root of the malignancy.

By using the Mohs technique, physicians are able to remove the tumor in layers without touching the surrounding healthy tissue, which minimizes the potential for both scarring and re-growth.

Most often used to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas, Mohs Surgery can also be used to treat tumors resulting from melanoma.

New Method Discovered To Kill Cancer

 Flu Pathology
Why is this NOT Headline News?

Hey folks,

Seriously. Why is this NOT Headline News. Why is this not, at least the POSSIBILITY of this leading to an actual CURE for Cancer, NOT the Headline, Byline, Front Page news?

I first heard of this by a friend of mine. I started searching for this in the news, on the web, and anywhere I could think to look. I only found it HERE. According to Rocket News - Vaccine implant ‘kills tumours’

An implant placed under the skin can instruct the immune system to attack and kill cancer cells, at least in mice, say researchers.

It is the first "cancer vaccine" delivered in the form of a plastic implant that can destroy tumours, say the Harvard University team.

It works by attracting certain immune cells and showing them what the tumour in question looks like.

This really is fascinating.

Cancer Research UK said that vaccine research was showing "real promise".

Cancer cells are good at evading the immune system because the body does not recognise them as "foreign".

Plastic disc

The idea of a vaccine to create an immune attack against a tumour is not a new one and there are versions currently in clinical trials.

"This study provides some useful insights into how we can effectively train the immune system to recognise and destroy cancer cells"

Dr Joanna Owens, Cancer Research UK

But most other studies have looked at removing immune cells from the body, reprogramming them to recognise the individual’s cancer and then returning them.

In the latest study, researchers developed an 8mm plastic disc that releases chemicals that attract a specific type of immune cell called a dendritic cell.

Immune cells can access the disc, which is implanted just under the skin. Once inside, they are exposed to proteins found on the surface of the cancer cells to be targeted.

With this information, the dendritic cells move on to the lymph nodes where they tell another type of immune cell, known as T cells, to hunt down and kill the cancer cells.

In mice with skin cancer, the implant was shown to successfully eliminate the tumours, the journal Science Translational Medicine reported.

ELIMINATING THE TUMOURS! Killing the Cancer. Or, in other words folks, CURING the person that has Cancer.

Healthy tissue

The researchers believe such implants could one day be used alongside chemotherapy and surgery to treat cancer.

In theory, the fact the immune system only targets the specific cancer cells avoids causing damage to healthy tissue and it is hoped the technique might produce long-term resistance reducing the chance of relapse.

For use in humans, the structure of the implant itself would need little modification but researchers said the immune activation components would need to be altered.

Study leader Professor David Mooney, an expert in bioengineering, said the technique was a "major step forward" in cancer vaccine design.

"Inserted anywhere under the skin – much like the implantable contraceptives that can be placed in a woman’s arm – the implants activate an immune response that destroys tumour cells," he said.

Dr Joanna Owens, science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said research into therapeutic cancer vaccines was beginning to show "real promise".

"This study provides some useful insights into how we can effectively train the immune system to recognise and destroy cancer cells.

"The use of an implant to deliver the vaccine is particularly interesting and the results look encouraging but more research is needed to see if the technology can be scaled up and adapted for use in people."

Of course it can. Why is this not making Mainstream News? Why are there not FAILED Government Programs that are being shut down and the financing of these FAILED programs being diverted to THIS Program immediately. Why other than the fact, most, most likely, have never heard of this, is there not PRIVATE Investors lining up to fund this?

Think of the savings in Healthcare. No more long term care. No more, in the long run, no more or REDUCED need for Chemo. No more long term Medication need? A person, in the future, maybe able to go in after diagnosis, have this disc implanted, and their own bodies can heal themselves. Think of the Billions Saved in,,,Oh. Perhaps I just answered my own question.
