More Evidence The ELMM Diet Works

Have you tried the newest Diet out there?

Hey folks,

You all know that I talk about Health and Science all the time. You know I bring you the latest Studies and question the relative facts. We talk Food here all the time as well. One of the things that most of us have in common, no mater Sex, Race, or Religion, we do not want to get, stay, Fat. We all think from time to time that we could lose a couple of Pounds. Some of us need to lose a bit more, just for general Health reasons.

There are many people out there that KNOW this. They have decided to make a living, in some cases, and very GOOD living, exploiting this fact. Oh, some may do it because they truly care. But most do it for the Profit. Promise someone they will fit into Jeans they wore before the two kids and 20 years have passed, and they jump at it. Tell someone they will DIE if they do not loose X amount of weight, they will buy your Product.

Have you tried the newest Diet out there? Did it fail? Try THIS one. Did it work? What about THIS one? Loose some weight? Did it come back? Take this Pill. Eat these Prepackaged Meals. Drink these Shakes. Eat these Cookies. Yes, there is a Cookie Diet out there.

As you know, I eat what I want. Everything in moderation. You also know, I only pitch ONE Diet. Guaranteed to work EVERY TIME it is tried, by EVERY ONE. I have taken some heat on this, every time I mention it. Can you guess why? Barring any extreme Medical Condition, this WILL work for you. And the best part? It's FREE!! As a matter of fact, it will SAVE you money in the long run. What's it called? The ELMM Diet. Eat Less, Move More.

It is really simple to understand. If you burn more than you take in, you loose weight. If you are burning what you take in, you stay the weight you are. If you take in more than you burn, you GAIN Weight.

In today's Health and Science Segment, we learn that there is even MORE evidence that this is one hundred percent true. According to the AFP - Sedentary life amplifies obesity genes: US study AFP – 11 hrs ago

A sedentary lifestyle can amplify a genetic disposition to obesity, but just walking briskly, and briefly, each day can cut that effect in half, a new study showed Wednesday.

"This is the first study that directly looked at the effect of the sedentary behavior of television watching on the body mass index (BMI) of individuals with a genetic predisposition to obesity," said study author Qibin Qi authors at a conference by the American Heart Association this week in San Diego, California.
Why do you think we have so many Fat Kids. Instead of going out and playing, they are sitting in front of Computers, Video Games, and TVs. Not to mention they are eating Garbage.

To combat the results, Qi said a one-hour daily walk "reduced the genetic influence towards obesity, measured by differences in BMI by half."

The study involved 7,740 women and 4,564 men, with researchers collecting data on their physical activity and TV watching two years prior to assessing their BMI.

The average American watches television for about four to six hours each day, noted Qi.
I'm not sure about that? I would suggest that the Computer is most likely were most sit for 6 hours a day. But you get the point.

The BMI indicator is the ratio of weight in kilograms (pounds) to square of height in meters (inches) -- on this scale, a score of 30 or more is considered obese.

The genetic effect on BMI was seen as "more pronounced in people who spent 40 hours a week watching television than those who spent an hour or less, 0.34 versus 0.08 kg/m2," according to the study.» The recommended walking exercise was associated with 0.06 kg/m2 reduction in the genetic effect on BMI, said researchers, who presented their report at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2012 Scientific Sessions conference in San Diego.
Remember the Swimmer, what's his name? Yeah, Michael Phelps. Remember HIS Diet? He ate EVERYTHING. His Breakfast would make me sick. But yet? Not an once of fat on him. Why? He burned it all off. Once again folks, the formula is indisputable. If you burn more than you take in, you loose weight. If you are burning what you take in, you stay the weight you are. If you take in more than you burn, you GAIN Weight. If you want to loose weight, Eat Less, Move More. It really IS just that simple.

Chocolate Cake For Breakfast?

You heard of eating Dessert first. Right?

Hey folks,

I love food. You all know that. I eat whatever I want. Everything in Moderation of course. Not to mention that I am also a firm believer and partaker in the ELMM Diet. {Eat Less, Move More} So knowing all that, if you are like me, you LOVE Dessert.

When talking about Dessert, there are many Schools of thought. One of my favorites? You heard of eating Dessert first. Right? That way you always have room. Well, there is a new Study out there that says you should REALLY eat it first. For Breakfast. Yup. For Breakfast. AND according to the Study, it will help you lose weight. I repeat, Chocolate Cake for BREAKFAST, to help you lose weight. Not kidding folks.

According to the UK Telegraph - Chocolate cake breakfast could help you lose weight Friday 10 February 2012 Eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast can help you lose weight, say scientists.

It sounds too good to be true but new research says having dessert - along with the traditional fry up - burns off the pounds.

Morning is the best time to consume sweets because that's when the body's metabolism is most active - and we have the rest of the day to work off the calories, a new study shows.

Eating cookies or chocolate as part of breakfast that includes proteins and carbs also helps stem the craving for sweets later.
Hey maybe Bill Cosby was right?

Researchers split 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults into two groups who consumed either a low-carb diet that included a 300-calorie breakfast or a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that included a chocolate cake dessert.

Halfway through the 32-week study both groups had lost an average of 33 lbs per person. But in the second half of the study the low-carb group regained an average of 22 lbs per person - while the dessert gorgers lost another 15 lbs each.

At the end those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 40 lbs more per person than their peers.
40 pounds? That's not insignificant. Who knew?

Although both groups consumed the same daily total calories - the men 1600 calories per day and the women 1400 - "the participants in the low-carbohydrate diet group had less satisfaction and felt that they were not full," said Professor Daniela Jakubowicz.

Their cravings for sugars and carbohydrates were more intense and eventually caused them to cheat on the diet plan.

This also suggests that the dessert group will be more successful at keeping the weight off, said the researchers whose findings are published in journal Steroids.

Prof Jakubowicz said: "But the group that consumed a bigger breakfast, including dessert, experienced few if any cravings for these foods later in the day."

Prof Jakubowicz, of Tel Aviv University, said attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term.

A meal in the morning provides energy for the day's tasks, aids in brain functioning and kick-starts the body's metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance.

And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger, said Prof Jakubowicz.

While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

Basing their study on this fact, the researchers hoped to determine whether meal time and composition impacted weight loss in the short and long term, said Prof Jakubowicz, or if it was a simple matter of calorie count.

She said one of the biggest challenges that people face is keeping weight off in the long-term. Ingesting a higher proportion of our daily calories at breakfast makes sense.

It's not only good for body function but it also alleviates cravings. Highly restrictive diets that forbid desserts and carbohydrates are initially effective but often cause dieters to stray from their food plans as a result of withdrawal-like symptoms. They wind up regaining much of the weight they lost during the diet proper.

Ultimately this shows a diet must be realistic to be adopted as part of a new lifestyle. Curbing cravings is better than deprivation for weight loss success, said Prof Jakubowicz.
You know, I will admit something. All through this Article I was waiting to see the "BUT" or "HOWEVER" with another expert calling this Study Flawed or that eating Sweets are bad for you in general. ETC. Yet. Nothing. Just eating Cake and Sweets in the Morning may actually be GOOD for you. Now this is a Study I can believe in. (Smile)

Over Weight Kids, Go Out and Play

This one is going to be hard for me to stay on topic.

Hey folks,

By now I'm sure that you have heard about this. According to Reuters - 219-pound boy shows growing problem of extreme obesity By Kim Palmer Reuters – 2 hrs 47 mins ago

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - The case of a 219-pound 8-year-old boy taken from his mother for health reasons spotlights a problem that has almost tripled in the U.S. in the last 30 years -- cases of extreme child obesity.

"Not only do we have a higher percentage of kids who are obese but a higher percentage of children who are severely obese," said Dr. Garry Sigman, director of adolescent medicine and associate professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Medical Center near Chicago, in an interview with Reuters.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 17 percent or 12.5 million of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 years are obese, as opposed to merely overweight.

Obesity in children is defined by the CDC as having a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex. "Overweight" is defined as a BMI at or above the 85th percentile.

About 2 million U.S. children have a BMI at or beyond the 99th percentile, according to a July article on childhood obesity in the Journal of the American Medical Association, co-authored by Harvard University child obesity expert Dr. David S. Ludwig. The article ignited controversy by saying that in some cases, removing a child from a home may be justified.

An average 8-year-old boy is about 55 pounds, making the boy in question approximately 165 pounds overweight or four times more than average, according to the CDC.
OK stop there. You get the point. The problem I have dealing with this is a simple one. Everyone is unique. You can tell when someone is over weight for THEM. But it may not be for, well, me. I know this guy, a friend, who is what one would call fat. No offense to my friend, he knows it. But here is the thing, He weighs 5 pounds more than I do. Yet, you would not consider me fat at all. Here are two 6 foot 1" 230 pound guys. Get the point?

We have talked about this before. Take someone like John Cena, or another one of the Pro Wrestlers out there. Some of them weigh 250 to 300 pounds. Yet there is not an once of Fat on them. Yes some you can pinch an inch and whatever, but reality is, they are not fat and no where near Obese. I'm Obese according to the "Chart." So I do not take any creed in this garbage. Hell, my Son Josh came home from School with a note saying he was bordering on Obese. Really? Screw off.

But then my next problem I had when I first heard this, was the obvious. CPS came and ripped this kid from his home, because some twit felt that because he is fat, the Parent is not suited to be the Parent. Now you know I have MAJOR issues with CPS. They have way too much power and they answer to NO ONE. We get reports all the time of Kids that disappear, are abused while in the "System." Nothing is done about it. Yet Joe the Neighbor has a problem with you and calls CPS. They can then come and take the kid out of your house BEFORE they conduct an Investigation. They after however long it takes, even if there is nothing found, the Kid can be returned or not, and there is nothing you can do about it. That is way too much power for ANY agency to have. This should never happen in the Land of the Free. We have Cops. We have Laws, if abuse is found, the Abuser goes to Jail, and they THEN should take the Kid into Safety.

Told you this was going to be hard for me to stay on topic. Now I will admit that an 8 year old that weighs 219 pounds is most likely a Health Problem. But the kid is an Honor Student. Never been in trouble. There is no abuse. Yet, CPS came in and ripped this kid from his Mother? That is a major issue with me.

Look folks, I love this definition of why this happened by Dr. Garry Sigman:

"That kind of weight gain is a very serious imbalance in both movement and calorie intake," in a younger child, he added.
LOL How long have I been telling you about the ELMM Diet? Every time I talk about the ELMM Diet it never fails. I get "Experts" that tell me, or those that have been sucked into the whole Diet Industry, "Pete, you can not say this. It's too simplistic a solution to a complicated Problem. You need to take into consideration all these different variables. Genes, Chemical imbalances, Thyroid Problems, ETC. Pete, do you not realize that Fat People are now protected as a disability Class? You can't say Eat Less Move More will help one to lose weight. Too simplistic." So what is the leading cause of Obesity? Of people getting fat. "A very serious imbalance in both movement and calorie intake." SO?

Kids today, as we have talked about in the past as well, no longer go out and Play. They sit home and surf the Web. Play on Facebook. Play Video Games for HOURS. Even a lot of their TOYS now do everything on their own. No need for imagination nor activity. Just watch. This is why I commend the people behind Kinect. YOU have to move when you play.

I understand that the Diet Industry is a Multi-Billion Dollar Industry. I understand that the ELMM Diet costs you NOTHING. No Pills, Shakes, Prepared Food Packs, Doctor Visits, Drugs, ETC. As a matter of fact, it could cost you LESS. Less food you have to buy in the long run.

I understand, TRUST me, the ease of turning the Computer or the XBOX into a babysitter. After you get home from a long day of work, sometimes you do not want to be bothered. "Daddy, can I go on the Computer?" Then before you know it it's 9pm and you haven't seen your kid for like three hours. How about saying "No. I thought we could take a bike ride, or a walk, or toss the ball around outside?" An active Kid is an Active Adult. Lets teach more Parents to do THIS. Wouldn't THIS be better than ripping Families apart? Just a thought. If you think your kids maybe getting a little chunky, or getting a bit of a belly, why not try what YOUR Parents most likely did. Tell them to go out and play.

The Spud IS Good

This is GREAT News. I do love my Potatoes.

Hey folks,

I'm sure you have heard this. White potatoes have carbs that convert quickly to sugar. They are also high in Potassium. Eating Potatoes can cause blood sugar and insulin to surge, so of course a diabetic should stay away from them. However, are they REALLY that bad for you?

I guess the answer is yes and no. According to Veg Source: Potatoes bad? Not so fast

Recently a Harvard study concluded that potatoes are bad for those wanting to lose weight and be healthy. You can read about the study here.

But is this true and accurate? Or another example of shoddy "science?"

Well, if we are discussing French Fries, Potato Chips, and the standard versions of mashed, boiled and baked potatoes (covered with cheese, butter, bacon and sour cream) then yes, the potato looks like "bad news."

However, if we are talking about the plain old baked potato, then this study has no impact. Both the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization declared 2008 "The International Year of the Potato" -- based on the potato's importance to the health, welfare -- and survival -- of the human race.

You can read some interesting articles by Jeff Novick MS RD on the superior nutrition of the baked potato by clicking here and here.

Meanwhile, if you're ready to be schooled about just how wonderful the potato is for human health, WATCH THIS VIDEO OF DR. MCDOUGALL: HERE.
So I checked out some of the links. This one, from the Washington Post - Potatoes bad, nuts good for staying slim, Harvard study finds seems to be totally focused on Weight Loss. They even mention the ELMM Diet.

The findings add to the growing body of evidence that getting heavier is not just a matter of “calories in, calories out,” and that the mantra: “Eat less and exercise more” is far too simplistic. Although calories remain crucial, some foods clearly cause people to put on more weight than others, perhaps because of their chemical makeup and how our bodies process them.
Yeah, I know. Eat Less Move More is just to simplistic. It can't be that simple. Lets spend MILLIONS and do a study, come up with excuses why it may not work for someone. YET? A little bit further in the Article?

Lifestyle factors were clearly important. Those who exercised more gained nearly two pounds less than those who increased their physical activity the least.
Really? {Laughing} Now back to the Potato being good for ya. I encourage you to watch the Video. I did. It's only 4 minutes long. I will be watching the full talk at the Link at the end of the Video when time allows.

Imagine living on an ALL Potato diet? I'm not sure about that, but I DO love my Potatoes.

Healthy Eating?

You may be surprised.

Hey folks,

As some of you know, my Wife is a Vegan. I'm doing my best to eat healthier. Not ready for the total Vegetarian thing yet. But eating healthier is always better than not. My most recent change has been from White Bread Totally, to Honey Wheat. I can't do the Grain Breads, but the Honey Wheat I actually like.

As I continue to look into Healthy Eating, I'm discovering that I have MORE questions than I did before. If you are like me, and trying to eat healthier, then you need to be aware of things like this. According to Yahoo Health - Don't Let Food Names Fool You! By Amy Ahlberg, Rodale.com Thu, Jul 21, 2011

If healthy eating, is important to you, watch out for misleading healthy-sounding food names. According to a study published online ahead of print in The Journal of Consumer Research, simply changing the name of a food item can influence its perceived healthfulness to dieters, who seem to rely more heavily on food cues—such as food names—than nondieters. Ambiguous names like "veggie chips," "flavored water," or simply calling a dish a "salad" can convince dieters that the item has nutritional value, whereas other names lead to the belief that the item is unhealthful.
Well YEAH. If someone asked me what was more healthy for me, a Salad or a Big Mac, I would most likely chose the Salad. Right?

The details: These perceptions can have unhealthy effects: According to study author Caglar Irmak, PhD, assistant professor of marketing at the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, the study's findings show that dieters may actually end up eating more of these not-so-healthy foods. Says Irmak, "One of our key findings is that dieters rate foods with healthy-sounding names [for example, salad] as healthier than identical food items with less-healthy-sounding names [for example, pasta]." Dieters base their food decisions on the name of the food items, instead of the ingredients, says Irmak. So they may eat more calories than what their dieting goals prescribe. "In one of our studies, when a candy was called 'fruit chews,' dieters ate significantly more candies than when the candy was called 'candy chews'."

5 Ways food labels try to mislead you.

What it means: Irmak's advice is to be vigilant about a food's actual ingredients. "Dieters need to focus on the ingredients of the food items, rather than names only, as many food items are healthy in name only," he says. But the good news is that checking the ingredients can erase the misleading effects of the food's name."In one of our studies, when we asked dieters about the healthfulness of each ingredient in the food item before they evaluated the overall healthfulness of the item, the effect of the food name vanished," says Irmak.

It's possible to avoid being seduced by a healthy-sounding food, if you pay attention. Here are some tips for sorting the "health" from the hype:

6 Things food industry executives don't want you to know.

Salads aren't always healthy.

Often, dieters skip pizza and burgers and opt for main-course salads, imagining them to be the healthiest foods on the menu. And restaurants perpetuate the belief that their salads are nutritious, low-calorie options, even though many salads at chain restaurants can hover around (or top) 1,000 calories, thanks to gigantic portion sizes, fatty and/or fried toppings, and creamy dressings. These super-size salads can also contain almost a day's worth of sodium, so buyer beware. Fast fixes include having a half portion, if it's on the menu, or just packing up half of your order to take home.

All bottled waters aren't the same.

Some flavored waters or vitamin-enhanced waters can contain up to 200 calories per bottle. Sucking down just one of these a day could create a 20-pound weight gain in a year's time. A smarter substitution? Calorie-free flavored waters without added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Look for brands that contain just a hint of natural flavoring, or sip on naturally flavored seltzer water for hydration minus the additives.

Fruit-flavored snacks aren't fruit.

Gummy fruit treats, fruit roll-ups, fruit bars and other items with fruit on the label may contain some juice or fruit flavoring, but often don't actually contain fruit. But they can contain high-fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, and other unhealthy ingredients. A superior swap is pretty obvious—go for fresh fruit. Another portable option? Chewy dried fruit (remember to check the label for added sugar and calories). Both offer up the fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients missing from fruit-flavored snacks.

Veggie chips are still, well, chips.

While baked veggie chips might seem better for you than traditional chips, they can still contain up to 8 grams of fat per one-ounce serving—almost as much as a small bag of potato chips. Having actual cut-up veggies, even with a small amount of dip, is a better way to satisfy your craving for crunch. The fat in the dip even helps with the absorption of key nutrients in the vegetables.
No I was aware of some of these. I am FULLY aware that not all Fruit Snacks are Fruit. Not even Roll-Ups. I found that out the hard way. I thought I was doing right by giving Josh them, but then Laura told me to check out the ingredient. Yup. No Fruit whatsoever. Or very little.

I was surprised about the Water thing. But that makes sense. I really dislike Veggie Chips. Laura loves them. But I can't stand Baked Chips of any kind. Too hard for me. But the bottom line here is Ingredients, Ingredients, Ingredients. Read the Lables. Now I DO still stand by Moderation. I still find it both Logical and Factual that as long as you consume ANYTHING in Moderation, you'll be just fine. Of course, if you are looking to lose weight, there is still only one Diet that is GAURUNTEED to work EVERY TIME with EVERY BODY that tries it. The ELMM Diet. Eat Less, Move More.

Eat Now, Taste Later

That's how I do it most of the time. But that really isn't all that good for you.

Hey folks,

As you all know, I am a huge Advocate for the ELMM Diet. Guaranteed to work every time. Simply put, Eat Less Move More. I know, from time to time that is easier said than done. Especially around the Holidays. All that wonderful Food around.

I get it. I really do. Then you have another aspect of it, time. For around 4 years, back in my youth, when I was in Mall Security, and Single, I would eat once a day. It was usually McDonald's. I would pull up in the Patrol Truck, go through the Drive Through, and then eat right there in the Parking Lot. We had a Few hiding places. But I would eat so fast, never knowing if a call was going to come in, I started using the Phrase, Eat now, taste later. That's a HARD habit to break.

Now one would have to figure that as far as Digestion goes, Eating faster means bigger pieces. It takes longer to Digest. It also means, before you know it, your food is gone. You may THINK that you are still hungry, even if you are not, then you can EASILY over eat.

So if you want to reduce the amount of food, ease your Digestion a bit, and perhaps even TASTE the food, here are some tips from our friends over at Health Day. Sort and sweet to say the least.

Health Day - Health Tip: Slow Down When You Eat – Fri Jan 14, 11:47 pm ET

(HealthDay News) -- If you've resolved to lose weight, taking the time to savor your food may be an easy way to help you eat less.

The American Dietetic Association suggests how to eat slower:

Put down your utensils between each bite.
Use chopsticks instead of Western utensils.
Chew your food completely before swallowing.
Make meal time a social time. Engage in conversation to stretch out the meal and interrupt your eating.
So basically, eat now, taste later, bad. Making dinning more than just you and food sounds an awful lot like enjoy every moment, for you only get one. Every breath is precious. Even in bad times, every moment can be so much more than just traveling through it at Light Speed. Life is short. You only get one Today, make it a good one. That sort of thing.

"But Pete. It's FOOD! Who cares?" You know how many people in this world have none? When we get hungry, the big question is "What's for Dinner?" Some in the World? "Where's Dinner?" "Is there Dinner?" Food is just one more thing we take so much for granted in this Country. Let's slow down a bit. Enjoy the moment, ease your Digestion, and hey, maybe even lose some weight.
